Orthotics

Description/Conditions:

Orthotics is a science and engineering based healthcare profession that is concerned with improving function loss and structural deformity.

A number of conditions can benefit from an orthotic solution including:

  • Sports injury; such as joint pain, pronation, supination, planter fasciitis, shin splints, Achilles pain, golfers & tennis elbow, hernia, shoulder strain/instability, knee, hip and back injuries
  • Diabetes
  • Back pain (e.g. spondylsois/litis/lolisthesis)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Stroke (CVA)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Motor neuron disease
  • Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy
  • Spina bifida
  • Torticollis
  • Pregnancy pain such as carpal tunnel syndrome and back pain

A number of orthotics can be supplied (made to measure or off-the-shelf) including:

  • Insoles (functional foot orthotics, total contact)
  • Shoes, bootees & boots
  • Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO), Dynamic Ankle Foot Orthotics (DAFO), Silicon Ankle Foot Orthotics (SAFO)
  • Callipers with shoe adaptations
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
  • Compression Hosiery for lower & upper limb
  • Knee braces, Knee Ankle Foot Orthotics (KAFO)
  • Hip supports/protection
  • Back supports/braces/corsetry
  • Abdominal supports/corsetry
  • Shoulder and neck supports
  • Head Protection

Consultant:

Mark Southwick – Orthotics
Mark graduated in Orthotics and Prosthetics at Salford University. He is registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a member of the British Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics (BAPO). Mark has worked closely with Consultants within Rehabilitation, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Diabetes and in Rheumatology. He has also worked with senior Podiatrists and Physiotherapists. Mark has worked with a range of patients from newly born to elderly and as such has seen and been able to treat a range of conditions.
