Baby Scanning

Ultrasound scans use sound waves, high-frequency sound, which is beamed through your abdomen to build a picture of your baby in the womb. The sound is reflected back and creates a picture, displayed on a TV screen. It is safe for the baby and you, is completely pain free can and be carried out at any stage in the pregnancy.

Scans of this kind have become a routine part in the care of pregnant women, offering an insight into the development of the baby. It will show the position of your baby and as importantly the placenta, which in late pregnancy is monitored carefully.

Early pregnancy scans are performed for several reasons; determining the number of babies being carried, and reassurance that your baby’s heartbeat is present. You can have an Early Pregnancy Scan any time from 6 weeks into your pregnancy. These dates are calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) not the day of conception. Before 5 weeks it is not possible to see any signs of pregnancy with current ultrasound technology.

Baby scans are for the first 14 weeks of your pregnancy.
